Plant Description

Salix integra 'Hakuro-nishiki', commonly known as Flamingo Willow, is a colourful deciduous willow, grown for its pink, cream and green variegated spring foliage and graceful, fine stems. This Salix is an excellent choice for borders, containers, patio, specimen planting and informal structure, where it brings bright foliage colour, movement and seasonal interest. It performs best in full sun to partial shade.

Flamingo Willow is a reliable choice for UK gardens when planted in the right conditions. Reaching around 2.5m at maturity, it works well as a feature shrub, patio plant or lightly clipped specimen. It performs best in loam or clay soils that are moist but well-drained. Regular pruning in late winter or early spring encourages the strongest flush of pink and cream new growth.

Supplied in a 2L pot, this size offers a practical starting point for planting out, patio displays or growing on at home.

Planting & Aftercare

Choose a pot with drainage holes slightly larger than the nursery pot. Use well-draining potting mix. Place the plant at the same depth it was in the original pot. Water thoroughly after planting.
Water when the top 2-3cm of soil feels dry. In spring and summer, this is typically once a week. Reduce watering in autumn and winter. Always check the soil before watering to avoid overwatering.
Overwatering is the most common issue. Avoid placing in direct sunlight which can scorch leaves. Don't repot too frequently - most plants prefer to be slightly root-bound. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot.
Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser every 2-4 weeks during the growing season (spring to early autumn). Reduce or stop feeding in winter when growth naturally slows.
