Plant Description

Clematis Montana Broughton Star 3ft Cane is a garden climber grown for the appeal of Clematis montana 'Broughton Star', with pink flowers from summer into autumn and green deciduous foliage. This Clematis is an excellent choice for borders and woodland-style planting, where it brings colour, texture and seasonal interest. It is especially effective from summer into autumn, and performs best in sun or partial shade.

Clematis Montana Broughton Star 3ft Cane is ideal for training over trellis, wires, pergolas and arches, helping to soften vertical surfaces and add seasonal interest. This variety climbs by twining, so it benefits from suitable support as it establishes and grows on. Reaching around 6m at maturity, it is best planted towards the back of a border and as a specimen plant with sun or partial shade. As a deciduous plant, it brings a fresh flush of new growth each season. It is suitable for outdoor growing in most UK gardens. It performs best in sandy, loam or chalk soils that remain well drained. It can also be a useful plant for bees and beneficial insects.

Supplied in a 3L pot, this size offers a practical starting point for planting out, patio displays or growing on at home.

Planting & Aftercare

Choose a pot with drainage holes slightly larger than the nursery pot. Use well-draining potting mix. Place the plant at the same depth it was in the original pot. Water thoroughly after planting.
Water when the top 2-3cm of soil feels dry. In spring and summer, this is typically once a week. Reduce watering in autumn and winter. Always check the soil before watering to avoid overwatering.
Overwatering is the most common issue. Avoid placing in direct sunlight which can scorch leaves. Don't repot too frequently - most plants prefer to be slightly root-bound. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot.
Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser every 2-4 weeks during the growing season (spring to early autumn). Reduce or stop feeding in winter when growth naturally slows.
