Plant Description

Calluna vulgaris 'County Wicklow' is a reliable herbaceous perennial, with pink / purple flowers from summer into autumn and green evergreen foliage. This Heather is an excellent choice for borders, containers, patio pots and ground cover, where it brings colour, texture and seasonal interest. It is especially effective from summer into autumn, and performs best in a sunny spot.

Calluna vulgaris 'County Wicklow' is low-maintenance once established and suits a wide range of garden styles, from traditional borders to more contemporary planting combinations. Reaching around 0.5m at maturity, it is best planted at the front of a border and in pots and containers with a sunny spot. Its evergreen foliage ensures year-round presence in the garden. It is suitable for outdoor growing in most UK gardens. It performs best in sandy or loam soils that remain well drained. It can also be a useful plant for bees, hedgehogs and beneficial insects.

Supplied in a 9cm pot, this size offers a practical starting point for planting out, patio displays or growing on at home.

Planting & Aftercare

Choose a pot with drainage holes slightly larger than the nursery pot. Use well-draining potting mix. Place the plant at the same depth it was in the original pot. Water thoroughly after planting.
Water when the top 2-3cm of soil feels dry. In spring and summer, this is typically once a week. Reduce watering in autumn and winter. Always check the soil before watering to avoid overwatering.
Overwatering is the most common issue. Avoid placing in direct sunlight which can scorch leaves. Don't repot too frequently - most plants prefer to be slightly root-bound. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot.
Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser every 2-4 weeks during the growing season (spring to early autumn). Reduce or stop feeding in winter when growth naturally slows.
