Plant Description

Athyrium niponicum pictum is a foliage-rich fern and silver deciduous foliage. This Lady Fern is an excellent choice for borders, containers, woodland-style planting, patio pots and ground cover, where it brings colour, texture and seasonal interest. It performs best in partial to full shade and rewards the right position with reliable garden performance.

Athyrium niponicum pictum is grown primarily for its elegant fronds and calming, leafy presence, making it especially effective in shaded gardens and woodland planting. Its textural foliage contrasts beautifully with hostas, heucheras and other shade-loving plants. Reaching around 0.9m at maturity, it is best planted at the front of a border, in pots and containers and in woodland-style planting with partial to full shade. As a deciduous plant, it brings a fresh flush of new growth each season. It is suitable for outdoor growing in most UK gardens. It performs best in clay or loam soils with moist conditions.

Planting & Aftercare

Choose a pot with drainage holes slightly larger than the nursery pot. Use well-draining potting mix. Place the plant at the same depth it was in the original pot. Water thoroughly after planting.

Water when the top 2-3cm of soil feels dry. In spring and summer, this is typically once a week. Reduce watering in autumn and winter. Always check the soil before watering to avoid overwatering.

Overwatering is the most common issue. Avoid placing in direct sunlight which can scorch leaves. Don't repot too frequently - most plants prefer to be slightly root-bound. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot.

Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser every 2-4 weeks during the growing season (spring to early autumn). Reduce or stop feeding in winter when growth naturally slows.
