Plant Description

Acer palmatum 40/60 is a decorative garden tree grown for the appeal of Acer palmatum and green deciduous foliage. This Japanese Maple is an excellent choice for borders, containers, woodland-style planting and patio pots, where it brings colour, texture and seasonal interest. It performs best in sun or partial shade and rewards the right position with reliable garden performance.

Acer palmatum 40/60 is a strong choice for adding lasting structure, height and seasonal character to gardens of many styles. Its nan form makes it particularly useful where a clear shape and manageable silhouette are wanted. Reaching around 3m at maturity, it is best planted towards the back of a border, in pots and containers and as a specimen plant with sun or partial shade. As a deciduous plant, it brings a fresh flush of new growth each season. It is suitable for outdoor growing in most UK gardens. It performs best in sandy or loam soils that remain well drained. It can also be a useful plant for beneficial insects.

Supplied in a 9cm pot, this size offers a practical starting point for planting out, patio displays or growing on at home.

Planting & Aftercare

Choose a pot with drainage holes slightly larger than the nursery pot. Use well-draining potting mix. Place the plant at the same depth it was in the original pot. Water thoroughly after planting.
Water when the top 2-3cm of soil feels dry. In spring and summer, this is typically once a week. Reduce watering in autumn and winter. Always check the soil before watering to avoid overwatering.
Overwatering is the most common issue. Avoid placing in direct sunlight which can scorch leaves. Don't repot too frequently - most plants prefer to be slightly root-bound. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot.
Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser every 2-4 weeks during the growing season (spring to early autumn). Reduce or stop feeding in winter when growth naturally slows.
